HowMuchie

Set your own exchange rate. Know what things actually cost.

HowMuchie converts foreign prices using the rate you really got — cash, card or ATM — and tracks every spend against your trip budget. No signal needed.

Free to start. One-time unlock, no subscription.

The HowMuchie home screen showing a saved rate of 1 USD = 159.10 JPY, an amount of ¥1,480 converting to USD9.30, and a Spend button.

The problem

Every other converter shows you a rate you'll never get.

Google, your phone, and almost every currency app show the mid-market rate — the rate banks trade at with each other. You are not a bank. The exchange counter took a margin. Your card added its own on top. By the time that dinner reaches your statement, it costs more than the number you checked before you ordered it. Do that forty times in a week and the holiday you budgeted for isn't the holiday you paid for.

HowMuchie works from the other end. You tell it the rate you actually got. Every number after that is true.

How it works

Four steps, once per trip.

  1. Set your rate.

Whatever the exchange counter quoted, or whatever your card charged last time. One number, once.

  2. Type the price.

Open the app and the keypad is already waiting with your trip loaded.

  3. Tap Spend.

Log it with a note in two taps. “Night market bag.” Done.

  4. Watch your budget move.

Spent, remaining, and what you've got left per day — updated the second you log it.

The spend history screen listing logged purchases with notes, each showing the foreign amount and its converted cost. A trip screen for Japan showing a USD2,000.00 budget, USD869.14 spent, USD1,130.86 remaining and a 43% progress bar.

Budget pace

It warns you while you can still do something about it.

Most budget apps tell you what you spent. HowMuchie tells you where you're heading.

Day 3 of 7 · 62% of budget spent

At this rate you'll be over budget by day 5.

You have ¥8,400 a day left.

Colour-coded, so you know at a glance without reading anything. And when the trip's done it's archived — so next time you're planning a week in Tokyo, you know what a week in Tokyo actually costs you.

The home screen showing a heads-up warning that at the current rate the budget will be exceeded by day 10, and a daily allowance of ¥22,490.00 per day.

Offline & private

No account. No login. No server. No signal required.

Everything lives on your phone. Nothing is uploaded anywhere, because there's nowhere to upload it to. It works on the plane. In the metro. In a market with no roaming. Turn on the fingerprint lock and what you spend stays between you and your phone.

The profile screen stating “Stays on this phone — no account, no sync, no server. Nothing you enter is ever sent to us.”

Questions

Straight answers.

Can I set my own exchange rate instead of using live rates?

Yes. You enter the rate you were actually given — by a money changer, your bank card, or an ATM — and every conversion uses that rate instead of the live market rate.

Does it work without internet?

Yes, completely. Everything is stored on-device; no server.

Is there a subscription?

No. Free with one trip and a banner. One-time payment removes both, permanently.

What exchange rate does my credit card actually use?

Your card issuer applies its own margin plus often a separate fee; check a past statement (charged ÷ price = your real rate) and enter that.

Does it track my holiday spending?

Yes — spend logged against a per-trip budget, running total, daily allowance, overspend warning.

Do I need an account?

No sign-up, no email, no login.
